Mrs. Malvina Read, 97, Dies,
Funeral Wednesday

Mrs. Malvina Read, 97, Piper City's oldest resident, died at 9:05 o'clock Monday morning, November 23, at the Gibson City Convalescent Home, following an extended illness.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Methodist church in Piper City, conducted by the Rev. Lewis E. Root. Burial took place in Brenton cemetery.

Malvina E. Read was born at Odell, Illinois, March 21, 1862, a daughter of Daniel and Alzada Marble. At the age of seven years she came with the family to reside on a farm in Pella township. She attended the rural schools of that area and also attended Valparaiso College in Indiana and Grand Prairie Seminary in Onarga. She taught schools in the home community before her marriage to Charles M. Read on Sept. 25, 1889. His death occurred September 27, 1922.

Mr. and Mrs. Read resided on a farm in Pella township until 1909 when they moved to Kankakee and resided there for six years. In 1915 they returned to the farm and she continued her residence there until 1943 when she moved to Piper City. Two years ago she entered the nursing home in Gibson City.

Surviving are two sons, Charles Edwin Read of Paxton and Elmo E. Read of Piper City, six grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Orville A. Read, a brother and two sister.

Mrs. Read was a charter member of Piper Chapter No. 578, Order of the Eastern Star and received her fifty-year pin from the chapter in 1956. She was a member of the Piper City Methodist church and a former member and active worker in the church at Ridge Chapel which she helped organize and build.
