In 1861, he enlisted in the 1st Regiment of Missouri Calvary of the Confederate Army. (Calvary units were often comprised of those who could supply their own horses.) He saw action in several battles including the siege at Vicksburg, Mississippi where he was wounded and taken prisoner.
After the war in 1868, he married Lucy Britt. They had 2 children: Mrs M. A. Lyons of Mobile, AL and Mrs Charles Dever.
He died at his sister's house, Verona Bosley. His brother-in-law, George W Bosley, was also a veteran of the Civil War on the Union side.
His marker is near theirs.
