Sylvester was a son of Elijah and Mary Ann (Wallis Lemon) Ash. He spent much of his life farming, but he also held several patents for things he invented.
On 22 February 1872 he married Malinda Hodges, who had "changed her name" to Dallia. Their children were: Bert Neal, who married Della Alice Howard; Virgil Edgar, known as "Boss" and husband of Emma Milford; Mabel, not quite a year old when she died; Arthur, who died at 15; Nettie Agnes, wife of Delos Story; Lela Anna, married to Cal Spencer; Lucy Mae; and two unnamed infant girls. Of all the children, only Nettie had children of her own.
