He first married a widow, Elizabeth Thacker, 21 December 1823 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. Elizabeth had at least one son from her previous marriage to Thomas Thacker, Zachariah Thacker. He later spoke kindly of the help he had from Elijah getting started with his life.
Elijah and Elizabeth had the following children together: Israel, Eliza Jane, Amos, William Wallace, James Monroe, Caswell, John Wesley, Nancy Delilah, and Margaret E. Ash. Elizabeth died by 1845 and was buried with Eliza Jane in Old Manchester Cemetery, Manchester, Scott County, Illinois.
