Pinkie Burgess Acuff, 58, well-known Caruthersville business man, died at his home, 201 West Eleventh, on January 27, after having been in ill health for the past two years or so. Mr. Acuff, owner of People's Oil Company, had been in the wholesale and retail oil business for the past thirty years, serving customers all over Pemiscot county.
He was born November 14, 1896, at Braggadocio, the son of the late Joseph and Mary Acuff. The family moved to this city when he was about 15 years old, and he had lived here continuously since that time. Long a member of the Baptist Church, he took an active part in the work of the church until his health failed. He was also a charter member of the Bootheel Odd Fellows Lodge No. 893.
On February 28, 1917, in Kennett, he was united in marriage to Miss Delphia Mae Mills of Benton, Ill., who survive. He also leaves two sons. P.B. Acuff Jr. of this city and Dr. William Acuff of Memphis; two daughters, Mrs. Evelyn Lawes of Denver, Colo. and Mrs. Mary Constance Cullum of Caruthersville; a brother, William Acuff of St. Louis; a half-brother, John B. Acuff of Russellville, Ark.; a sister, Mrs. Nellie Lackey of Dumas, Ark.; two granddaughters and a grandson.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Baptist church, with the Rev. D.K. Foster of Biggers, Ark., former pastor of the church, conducting the service. Burial was in Maple emetery with graveside rites conducted by the Oddfellows Lodge and with H.S. Smith Funeral Home service.
