In one of the most diasatrous highway accidents in local history, three youths of this city, Charles William Phelps, Robert Dowell and Ralph Willis, all aged 17, lost their lives shortly after 1 p.m. Wednesday in a truck collision on Route U, the highway connecting this city with Highway 61 toward Braggadocio at a point near Marvin Chapel, some three or four miles west of Caruthersville. The first named two were killed outright as the result of their injuries of the resultant fire as the piled-up trucks burst into flames and the Willis boy died in a hospital in Blytheville about 5 a.m. Thursday.

As stated, young Phelps was the son of Mr. and Mrs. J.N. (Jiggs) Phelps, residing on East Eleventh street, Dowell, the son of Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Dowell and Willis, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Willis, both families living on East Tenth Street. ......
Funeral services were sat for 3:30 p.m. yesterday (Thursday) for Phelps and Dowell at the Pilgrim Holiness Church in this city, with the Rev. Roy F. Bradley officiating and burial was in Little Prairie Cemetery.
Services for Willis, with Smith Funeral Home service were set this (Friday) afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Church of Christ of this city, other details being incomplete as this paper went to press.

Services for the third victim of the accident, Ralph Willis, who was so badly broken up and burned that he died in a Blytheville hospital early Thursday morning, were held Friday, July 19 at 2:30 p.m. at the Church of Christ in this city, the Rev. E.W. Stovall of Blytheville officiated.
Young Willis, the son of Robert and Lyda Cole Willis, was born in Caruthersville January 31, 1928 and in addition to his parents is survived by two brothers and five sisters. They are Harold and Robert Willis of this city; Mrs. Wavel Carter of Malden and Deloris, Clydia, Phillis and Norma Willis, all of Caruthersville. One of his grandparents, Mrs. Mattie Jones, of Osceola, Ark. also survives.
