Conflict exists on death date. Nelle Cadle (Watson) Sherman's publication, "History of John Calvin Davis" states dod was "1854 in Coles Co, IL on March 12".
Dorothy (Maupin) Shaffett's book, "The Story of Gabriel and Marie Maupin" has dod of June 2, 1854. Researcher Samuel Steven Sargent lists a marker reading in 1925 of "d. 2-Jun-1854, age 67 years". No marker containing that information has been present for many years. Apparently it had been replaced with a temporary funeral home marker with years only, set in concrete.
The new marker was set on 27 Nov 2019 thanks to donations from descendants, a family friend and the Spence Monument Co, in Charleston.
