SARAH A. BATHGATE CASTLE (22 Mar 1826 - 8 Jan 1903)
Newspaper: Medina Tribune; Thurs., 8 Jan 1903

Mrs. R. S. CASTLE, the oldest resident of Medina, died this morning at three o'clock at the family residence on Pearl street, after a long sickness, which was borne with the utmost patience, fully trusting in the mercy of her God, "Who doeth all things well." Mrs. CASTLE (Sarah A. BATHGATE) was born March 22, 1826, and was the first child born in Medina and had nearly completed her 77th year.

She is survived by her husband, Rueben S. CASTLE, five children, George G., William B. CASTLE and Mrs. William P. MURRAY, of Cleveland, Ohio, Miss Elizabeth F. CASTLE, of Washington, D. C., and Miss Jessie M. CASTLE of Medina. One sister, Mrs. George H. SHATTUCK, of Medina, and one cousin, Mrs. Agnes A. GEAGAN, of Passaic, N. J. She was a life long member of St. John's Episcopal Church and an active worker in all the activities and charities. Six years ago Mr. and Mrs. CASTLE celebrated their golden wedding.

She was one of the organizers of the Ladies' Aid Society in 1869 and continued a member until her death, and nearly all her active life its presiding officer. She was a woman of great amiability of character and charitable disposition, and her death will be sincerely mourned by a large circle of friends and acquaintances in every walk in life. Her last hours were calm and peaceful and she slept her life away in the bosom of her Saviour.

"So fades the summer cloud away
So sinks the gale when storms are o'er,
So gently shuts the eye of day,
So dies the wave along the shore."

The funeral will be held at her late residence on Pearl street, on Saturday afternoon at two o'clock.
(Interment in Boxwood Cemetery)
