Funeral services were conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, at Southern Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Coleman and the Rev. E. B. Barton officiating. Burial was in Sardis Cemetery under direction of Southern Funeral Home.
Acting as pallbearers were Ray Taylor, Sam Barton, Charles Shirley, Charlie Thornton, DeWitt Collins, Leon Hanson, William Bates, Raymond Walters.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lena Shumake; four daughters, Mrs. Mary H. Shirley, Baton Rouge; Mrs. Louise Huckaby, Bridgeport, Texas; Mrs. Cherry Estes, Kenner, La.; Mrs. Bertie Ray Walters, New Orleans; eight sons, J. E., Jack, and James L. Shumake, Winnfield; Vernon of Los Angeles, Jessie of New Orleans, Lyndon of the U.S. Navy, Harvey and Robert of Baton Rouge; one sister, Mrs. Floyd Long of Rt. 1, Winnfield, and Dee Shumake of Victoria, Texas; 26 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
