In 1861, Marshall Brewer was a clerk in Cyrus West Field's store in New York City. He served as a lieutenant in the 37th regiment during the Civil War with the New York Volunteers.

"The Gleaner" [Stockbridge, Massachusetts, newspaper], 9 October 1862, has the following under "Deaths": "In Stockbridge, Sept. 24th, Lieutenant Marshall Bidwell Brewer, youngest son of Rev. Josiah Brewer. Just as his term of service in the 37th N.Y.V.M. had expired, and while making arrangements for a Captaincy in the 5th Metropolitan, he was seized with typhoid fever, to which he had been exposed while guarding the hospital, and came home to die. He was in his 23rd year."

His name is included on a plaque in the Stockbridge Library.

He never married.
