He was the son of Eliab and Theodosia Bidwell Brewer. He graduated from Yale University as the valedictorian in 1821. By 1827, he had authored the book, "Residence in Constantinople." He married Emilia Ann Field on 1 December 1829 in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Shortly thereafter he took her to Smyrna (now Izmir), Turkey, where they were some of the first missionaries in the area. They established the first girls' school there. In 1838, they returned to the United States with their children, where he pastored Congregational churches and established a girls' school in Connecticut (1844-1857). In 1851 he wrote "Patmos and the Seven Churches of Asia."

After his first wife died he married Lucy Treadwell Jerome.
