It has been suggested that the date of John's birth be changed to 1866, as is inscribed on his marker in his mausoleum.

I have chosen to leave the birth year as 1867 as indicated in the birth record extraction found at Ancestry dot com which reads:

John Darden
in the Isle of Wight County Virginia Birth Records, 1867-96
Name: John Darden
Birth Date: 30 May 1867
Race: White
Sex: M (Male)
Father: Charles
Mother: Martha
Page: 59

I have personally viewed this record on microfilm, and I had originally recorded the year as 1867, which agrees with this extracted record.

His death certificate also records his birth year as 1867, again, as found at Ancestry dot com, this is the extracted record:

Mr John Morgan Darden
in the Virginia, U.S., Death Records, 1912-2014
Name: Mr John Morgan Darden
Gender: Male
Race: White
Death Age: 70
Birth Date: 30 May 1867

Death Place: Madison, Virginia, USA
[Nansemond, Virginia, USA]
Father: Henry Darden
Mother: Martha Ann Stephens

To date, the only reference I have found for a birth year of 1866 (other than the inscribed memorial marker) was the 1900 US Census enumeration.

From the Suffolk News-Herald, Suffolk, Virginia, published on May 31, 1937:
"LEADER PASSES
DARDEN FUNERAL RITES TOMORROW FROM FAMILY HOME
J. M. Darden's Death Yesterday Removes One of Leading Citizens of City
Funeral services for John Morgan Darden, one of Suffolk's most prominent business leaders, who died early Sunday morning at his camp on the Nansemond River will be held at the family residence, 104 South Broad street, Tuesday at 4 p.m.
The Rev. John G. Truitt, D. D., pastor of Suffolk Christian church will conduct the rites. Burial will be In Cedar Hill cemetery.
Although in ill health for a long time, Mr. Darden's death yesterday morning came as a shock to a group of friends including his physician, Dr. J. E. Rawls, who had been his dinner guests Saturday night on the evening of his 71st birthday anniversary.
He had told guests he felt better than usual and had been in excellent spirits, it was said. Mr. Darden retired about 10:30. At 1:30 a.m. he became ill and died within the hour.
Mr. Darden recently returned from Florida where he spent much of the winter in an effort to improve his heath. Under the care of a physician and nurse, he had decided on the week-end at Bleakhorn Camp as a beneficial change.
Mr. Darden's business connections were extensive. He was president of Sands and Co., with offices in Suffolk, Atlanta, Greensboro and other southern cities; vice-president of the National Bank of Suffolk and was financially interested in many other enterprises.
Patron of many charities, Mr. Darden's major interest outside business was the Christian Orphanage at Elon College. N. C., of which he has long been president. He knew personally every child at the institution he headed and was solicitous of their welfare.
In the Suffolk Christian church Mr. Darden was a member of the board of deacons and of the finance committee. He was a member of the Board of Missions of the Christian-Congregational Church and served as assistant secretary of the board.
A native of Isle of Wight County, Mr. Darden made his home there until 30 years ago when he established his office and later his residence at Suffolk. He was a son of the late Henry and Mrs. Martha Ann Darden of Isle of Wight.
Mr. Darden was educated in the private school of which Col. William H. Darden, a cousin, was headmaster.
Surviving Mr. Darden are his widow, Mrs. Viola Whitley Darden; two sons, John M. Darden, Jr., of Roanoke and Henvy Claiborne Darden, of Charleston, S. C.; five daughters, Mrs. C. Lynch Christian, of Lynchburg; Mrs. Richard Ziesing, of Bryn Mawr, Pa.; Mrs. H. Ford Whelden, of Detroit, Miss Antionette Darden, of Suffolk, and Mrs. Jack Musick, of Evanston, Ill.
