Evilena's obituary appeared in the Monday, February 24, 1930 issue of the Virginian-Pilot and the Norfolk Landmark:
"Mrs. Evilena Darden Pierce, aged 80, died at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Leighton A. Wright, 309 West Thirty-fourth street, yesterday afternoon at 4:15 o'clock. Besides Mrs. Wright she is survived by a son, Theodore L. Pierce, of Baltimore; two sisters, Mrs. Willie A. Lassiter, of Suffolk, and Mrs. Monie Vaughan, of Greensboro, N. C; a brother J. M. Darden, of Suffolk; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mrs. Pierce was a native of Isle of Wight County, but had been a resident of Norfolk for the last three years. The body will be taken from the residence to the Isle of Wight Courthouse Christian Church for funeral services at 2 o'clock. Burial will be in the family plot at Antioch."
