William R. Gordon, 94, of Metamora, died July 10, 2009.
Born Feb. 14, 1915 in Metamora, he was the son of Roscoe and Helen (Wright) Gordon, both deceased. On June 12, 1938 he married Viola Altar; she preceded him in death June 5, 2005.
Mr. Gordon lived much of his life in Franklin County, but enjoyed spending winters in Florida during his retirement years. He had been recorder and treasurer of Franklin County for over 20 years. He had also served on the Franklin County Council. He was a member of Metamora United Methodist Church and Manatee United Methodist Church in Florida; 75-year member of the Fraternal Order of Odd Fellows; the Metamora Masonic Lodge; Fraternal Order of Eagles #1129 of Brookville; and the Order of Eastern Star Chapter 449.
Survivors include daughters, Patricia (Raymond) Gulley of Metamora, Melba (Jerry) Truitt and Linda Alldredge, all of Evansville; brothers, Robert Gordon, George Gordon and Jerry Gordon; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents and wife he was preceded in death by a sister, Iona Hertel; a brother, John Gordon; and a grandson James (Jim) Gordon.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Phillips & Meyers Funeral Home in Brookville with the Rev. Wayne Ison officiating. Burial will take place in Metamora Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
