Bert was born in Warren Township. He was a merchant; Swift and Company of South Omaha.
Volunteered for Service on 2 May 1898. Was a Corporal in Co. H, 50th Iowa Volunteer Infantry during the Spanish-American War. Discharged from service by reason of Muster Out 30 Nov 1899.

On July 31, 1901 in Chariton, Iowa he married Ida Florence Preston. They had 3 children: Bernice Irene Murray, Martha Ramona Murray, and John Preston Murray.
