Claude Nix, 50, of St. Stephen, S.C., is the second fatality of the Independent truckers' war against rising fuel prices.
Nix was shot and killed Tuesday night on Highway 13, just south of Harrington, Del. He was driving for Albany Rug Co. of St. Stephen in a tractor-trailer truck leased from Bunch Leasing Co. of Charleston Heights, S.C. Delaware has been one of the states hardest hit by violence in the wake of a strike by independent truckers.
According to a report prepared by the Delaware State Police, Nix was shot through the left window of his cab by a male occupant of a two-door hard top Chevrolet. Nix was in a three-truck convoy. The driver of a second truck traveling behind Nix at the time of the shooting, provided descriptions of the shooting.
Mr. Nix was born in Berkeley County, a son of the late Herman and Gertrude Nix. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the St. Stephen Church of God.
Surviving are his widow, Elouise Harris Nix of St. Stephen; two sons, Michael S. Nix and Larry S. Nix, both of St. Stephen; four daughters, Mrs. Linda N. Morris of Bethera, Mrs. Claudette Knight, Mrs. Nina Moody and Miss Cheryl Nix, all of St. Stephen; and one brother, Roy Mixon of Andrews.
