ESTHER ROUGHLY GLOVER DERBYSHIRE She’s a Curlew Valley pioneer, settling in Snowville, Box Elder, UT next to Stone, Onieda, Idaho, and an ancestor for names such as Allen, Bradshaw, Neal, Garbanati, and Cottom. Her headstone reads Esther Derbyshire in the *Snowville Cemetery. Esther had four children, who immigrated to America and three lived in the Curlew Valley; Children of George Glover and Esther Roughley: 1)*Margaret Peggy Myas Glover (1857-1942, md.*Richard Allen, As an aunt and uncle, they raised *Peggy Wheeler Neal’s mother, Sarah Allen Wheeler) 2) Maria Glover (1861-1863, age 2) 3) Mary Maria Glover (1864-1936 md. Thomas Roughley – remained in England) 4) *Sarah Jane Glover (1864-1945, md. *Jesse Bradshaw) Children of James Darbyshire and Esther Roughley: *Elizabeth Derbyshire (1868-1902, md. *James Henry Garbanati Sr.) * Esther Roughly Glover Derbyshire was born on 20 May 1837 to Peter Roughley (Collier) and Margaret [Mary] Marlon (Marland) in Bickerstaff, Lancashire, England. On 12 May 1856, Esther married her first husband, George Glover (1834-1864). They had four or five children (see above). In 1861 England Census it lists; George (27y-coal mining laborer), Esther (23y), Margaret (3y), and Maria (3mo.) were living in Upholland, Lanc., Eng. Their daughters, Sarah Jane and Mary Maria were born in 1864. Later that year, George was buried on 6 Sept. 1864 in Rainford, Lanc., Eng. In 1867, Esther married James Derbyshire in Wigan, Lancashire, England, bringing her three young children with her to their union; Margaret Peggy Myas Glover (10y), (Maria Glover had died at age two), Mary Maria Glover (3y), and Sarah Jane Glover (2y). *James Derbyshire Jr. was born on 19 May 1835 [22 May written on headstone] in Pemberton, Lancashire, England to James Derbyshire Sr. and Elizabeth [listed on his death certificate]. The 1871 England Census records; James (35y), Esther (33y), [Mary] Maria Glover (7y), Sarah Jane Glover (6y), and Elizabeth Darbyshire (3y) were living in Bolton, Westhoughton, Lancashire, England. On 17 May 1875, Esther’s daughter, *Margaret P. M. Glover (18y) married *Richard [nicknamed Dick] Allen (20y) in Upholland, Lancaster, England, who came to Curlew area. In the 1881 England Census, James (45y), Esther (43y) and their daughter, Elizabeth (13y) were living in Upholland, Lancashire, where James worked as a coal miner. At some point in England, these Roughley, Glover, Derbyshire, and Allen family members joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS or Mormon). They became converted as they read, studied and prayed for truth about the gospel of Jesus Christ. They learned of a restored priesthood in the early 1800’s through the Prophet, Joseph Smith Jr. to the earth after Christ’s ancient apostles were martyred. Joseph Jr. translated an ancient record known as The Book of Mormon, which testifies of Jesus Christ’s teachings on the American continent. They believed the missionary’s teachings. They felt a burning desire in their heart to immigrate and join with the Saints in North America, particularly settling in the Utah Territory. In 1881, James (46y-father) immigrated to America one year before his wife and younger daughters. He went on the LDS steamship “Wyoming” from Liverpool to New York from 3 Sept. 1881 - 13 Sept. 1881. He crossed the plains by locomotive train. In 1882, Esther (age 45 - Mother) immigrated to America on the LDS steamship “Nevada” from Liverpool to New York (12 Apr. 1882 - 24 Apr. 1882), with her parents and daughters; Margaret M.P. Glover Allen (25y-married daughter), Sarah Jane Glover (age 17), Elizabeth Derbyshire (age 14) and parents; Peter (59y) and Mary Roughley (59y). They crossed the United States plains west by locomotive train. A COMPILIATION OF GENERAL VOYAGE NOTES RECORDS: (http://mormonmigration.lib.byu.edu/Search/showDetails/db:MM_MII/t:account/id:1011/keywords:Esther+Derbyshire) . –“ The Guion steamship Nevada, carrying the first [LDS] company (328 emigrants, 11 returning missionaries, four visitors) comprised four different nationalities, viz., English, Scotch, Welsh and Scandinavian (four). The great majority were from the British Isles. The ship was divided into two wards, and a president, appointed from the local priesthood, placed in charge of each. The hours appointed for prayer were 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. The Saints were counseled to exercise kindness and patience towards one another, to keep good order and observe the regulations of the ship, and be humble and prayerful before God. The company left in excellent health and spirits."Esther Roughley’s parents followed Esther’s family to settle in Almy, Uintah, Wyoming. That’s where they passed away and are buried; Grandfather Peter Roughley (d. 2 Aug. 1882 soon after arriving in America) and Mary M. Roughley (6 Apr. 1891). On 30 Sept. 1882, Esther’s daughter, Sarah Jane were married Jesse Bradshaw in Almy, WY.By the 1900 U.S. Curlew Valley Census, James Derbyshire was working in farm labor in Snowville, Box Elder, Utah, USA. It verifies that James’ (now 65y) immigration year is 1881, and he’s been married 44 years to Esther (now 63y). It needs to be checked that records show that Esther had 6 births with 4 living. Who and where is the other child? The household also includes Mariah Bradshaw (11y-granddaugher, b. in Wyoming) and Charles Botterfield (boarder).Esther knew heartache after her daughter, Elizabeth passed away. She was married to James Henry Garbanati Sr., and had given birth to Richard Allen on 23 Sept. 1902. A few days later on 2 Oct. 1902, her daughter Elizabeth died at age 34, and was *buried in the Snowville Cemetery. Elizabeth Derbyshire Garbanati left four children; Frederick (age 11), James Henry Jr. (age 8), Esther Rae (age 5), and Richard Allen (newborn) and a grieving husband. Esther would have tried to help with these young family members. Within three more years her husband, James passed away on 20 May 1905, and baby Richard had also passed (23 Sept. 1905), away from croup that same fall. Esther was called upon to endure heartache to the end of her life, witnessing those family trials. Our valiant pioneer, Esther, passed away on 2 July 1909. James Derbyshire and Esther Roughly Glover Derbyshire are both *buried in Snowville, Box Elder County, Utah, USA.
