Peter Roughley was born 2 (or 7) February 1810 and was christened in St. Helens, Lancashire a month later. His father is William Roughley and his mother is Mary (Marsh) Roughley. They were married in the Church of St. Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. Peter was raised in St. Helens, Lancashire. He married Mary Maria Marland 7 July 1833 at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. By the time their first child was born in 1834, they were living in Bickerstaffe, Lancashire, where Peter was working in the coal mines in that area.
In 1849 Peter and Mary Maria were baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Their children all eventually became members of the Church. They planned to immigrate to join the Latter-day Saints in Utah, and made arrangements to go in 1856 with their younger children. They did not make the trip at that time, but continued to hope to make the journey.
The made the journey when Peter and Mary Maria were 69 years of age in 1882, traveling by ship from Liverpool to New York City, and the by train. Their daughter Esther Darbyshire and her children traveled with them, and Esther’s husband James and a son-in-law had gone over several months earlier to seek positions in the coalmines in Almy, in the southwestern corner of Wyoming. Peter and Mary Maria arrived in Almy in June or July 1882.
Even though Peter was 69 years of age, he had no independent means to support himself and Mary Maria, so he began working in the Almy coal mines. Just a few weeks after they arrived, Peter was killed in a coal mining accident when the chunks of the mine roof collapsed upon him. The Deseret News (Salt Lake City, Utah) reported his death (30 August 1882):
“Died . . . .At Almy, Wyoming Territory, August 16th, 1882 PETER ROUGHLEY. Born at St. Helens, Lancashire, England, February 2nd, 1882. Deceased came to his death by a fall of coals in No. 4 Mine, Almy. He was among the first to embrace the gospel after its introduction in England, being baptized in Preston in that country. He died as he had lived, a faithful Latter-day Saint in the hopes of a glorious resurrection.” [The birth date is incorrect. The correct date is 1810.]
