Horatio Cullen DeMunn was born November 12, 1824 to John DeMunn and Clarissa Goodwill at Alexander, Genesee County in the state of New York. He was one of four DeMunn brothers. Horatio's mother Clarissa Goodwill was the widow Tisdale when she wed with John DeMunn and already had several children from her first marriage to William C Tisdale.

In November of 1826, just past the age of 41, Horatio's father John DeMunn died. Horatio was only 2 years old and would never really know his father. He was raised by his mother Clarissa, along with his Tisdale half brothers and sisters and his three DeMunn brothers, Noble Warren, James Monroe and Silas T.

Horatio was educated in local area grammar schools and then proceeded with his advanced education at Genesee and Wyoming Seminary's of New York. At the age of 20, he started teaching school in the state of New York.

In 1845, Horatio migrated west to LeRoy Township in Boone County Illinois and shared residence with his half brother Elias Lee Tisdale who had already pioneered his way there. H.C. was teaching school & farming in the LeRoy area when he met Abigail Ann Stackpole of Manchester Twp.

Horatio C DeMunn & Abigail Ann Stackpole were joined in Holy Matrimony by Justice of the Peace, Ira T Shue, November 22nd, 1849 in Clinton Wisconsin.

Horatio continued his role as a school teacher in various schools in the area and also continued with farming while wife Abigail became a mother & homemaker, all while still residing in LeRoy Township.

The couple eventually had 4 children in all. George M, Ella J, Kitty A and Mary Gertude.

H.C. first began Public Service at the County Seat for Boone County in Belvidere, Illinois when he was appointed Deputy Circuit Clerk in 1857. He moved with his family to Belvidere in 1858. Then in 1859 was elected County Treasurer.

In May of 1860, Horatio was one of 5 Boone County delegates who voted for Lincoln at the Illinois State Republican Nominating Convention held at Decatur, IL, a few months prior to the National Convention held later in Chicago Nov of 1860.

In about 1862, H.C. served as a nurse for wounded Union Civil War soldiers, his last service at Jackson Mississippi, where he was stricken with typhus fever and compelled to return home.

Sometime shortly after his return in 1863, he was appointed Circuit Clerk of Boone County to fill out the term of Dr. Daniel H. Whitney who had died. After serving out the term of Dr Witney, H.C. DeMunn ran for the office of Circuit Clerk and won. He was re-elected 1868 & 1872, therefore serving 3 terms total. He then served as Deputy Clerk again under his successor for a time and after retirement he was often called to consult and assist the County Clerk's Office.

On the 28th of July, 1903 Horatio's beloved wife Abigail, died at their home in Belvidere. The couple had been married for a little over 53 years at the time. Funeral services were conducted at their home of over 30 years at 318 Madison St.

Horatio's own death was the result of a mishap combined with his increasing years. While visiting one of his daughters he assisted tending the sheep in the barn and became tangled and fell. No immediate problem was detected but within the days that followed Horatio lost consciousness and grew steadily worse very quickly.

On the 3rd of January, 1906 the once long time Circuit Clerk of Boone County Illinois passed away. Funeral services for Horatio were also conducted at the DeMunn home and many area friends and dignitary's attended or sent their condolences.

My Great, Great Grandpa was Silas T DeMunn and H.C. DeMunn was one of his brothers.
