Jacob was the eldest child of John Pickett of North Carolina and his first wife, Sallie. The family moved to Butler County, Alabama in the mid 1830s. Jacob joined the 13th Alabama Inf, Co. G, along with his brother-in-law, William Caldwell, July 1861. He was wounded and captured at Gettysburg. Later, taken to a hospital, where his arm and a leg were amputated. He died soon after. He left behind his wife, Martha Ann Robertson Pickett,his son, Richmond, as well as his father, seven sisters, and two brothers.
