John Houston Rowden the first was a native of Tennessee. He married there (Rachel Sophrona Wasson) and became the father of five children. His wife died there and Mr. Rowden remarried to Lou Biddy, who was proud of her indian blood. Mr and Mrs. Rowden, together with his five children, two daughters (who both died in early life) and three sons, Jim, John 2nd, and Will migrated to Arkansas about 1875 and made settlement at Oxford, AR. Mr. Rowden and his second wife were the parents of eight children, 4 sons and 4 daughters. After a few years residence in Oxford, the Rowdens moved to Mammoth Springs where they stayed only a few years and moved back to Oxford in the early years of 1900. He was the pastor of the Oxford Presbyterian Church and also of the churches at Mt. Pisgah and Byron.
After coming back to Oxford he built and operated the Rowden Hotel. In connection with the hotel Mr. Rowden operated a livery barn for the accomodation of the teams of the traveling public.
