Van Henry Elrod, age 95, passed from life Friday September 16, 2011 in Sparta, Tennessee, where he was currently residing, with his son. He was born January 6, 1916 to Alanzo Elrod and Susie Abston Elrod in Sparta, Tennessee.
Mr. Elrod previously attended Macedonia Baptist Church and Calvary Baptist Church.
He served as a Surgical Technician grade T/4 in the U.S. Army during World War II in Germany and received the Bronze Star Medal.
He was a dairy farmer for most of his life. Up until a month ago, he enjoyed gardening and push mowing the lawn.
He was preceded in death by his parents Alonzo and Susie Abston Elrod, his loving wife Zina Ann Nash Elrod, one of his sons,
Dennis Lynn Elrod, two brothers
Jack Dempsey Elrod killed in World War II, Varris Elrod and wife Ima Carter Elrod;
two sisters Monie Winnie Elrod Petty and husband Comer, Mary Elrod Bussell and husband Bethel.
Survivors include a son Teddy Royce Elrod and wife Loretta of White County, Tennessee;
Daughter: Joanne Elrod Bottoms and husband Frankie of White County;
Brother: Roy Elrod and wife Louise of White County;
Seven Grandchildren: Julie Elrod Dockins and husband Vernon, Jonathan Matthew Elrod and wife Deborah, Brett Elliot Bottoms and wife Claudia, and Adrianne Bottoms Eldridge all of White County;
Nine great-grandchildren: Eli Micah Dockins, Levi Cross Dockins, Jasmine Nicole Dockins, Alexandria Jade Eldridge, Jackson Bradley Eldridge, Vincent Isaac Bottoms,
Sofia Brit Bottoms, Dennis Shane Elrod,
Eric Van Elrod and Rebecca Lynn Elrod
Services will be conducted on Sunday, September 18, 2011 in the Chapel of
Hunter Funeral Home with interment in Saylors Cemetery.
Kenneth Brown and Tom McCulley will officiate.
