George Henry Smith was the son of George A Smith (1812-1889)and Rebecca Johnson (1815-1855) of Logan County, Kentucky. His grandparents, Henry and Christina Smith, were pioneer settlers of Logan County in the 1790s. They had 12 children, some of whom carried on the pioneer spirit by moving on to Alabama, Missouri, and Texas; while others stayed in Kentucky. Many Smith descendents remain in Logan County today.

On December 29, 1880, George married Mary Louise Goldston of Lebanon, Tennessee. He ran a grocery in Adairville and they raised three children; Lizzie, George W., and Ella before moving to Bartow, Florida.
