In 1927 Fayette County, AL, schools--Bluff, Center, Shady Grove, Bethel, and Bethabra consolidated and built a larger school which they named Kirkland in honor of Beaurguard D. Kirkland. Born at the beginning of the Civil War, Burie was named for two Confederate heroes--Gen. P. T. G. Beauregard and Jefferson Davis. Burie served two terms as Commissioner of Fayette County, and also as a tax equalizer. When Burie died his brother Miles was visiting from TX. They were sitting in rocking chairs in the front yard as Burie died.
