Miles Kirkland married Mary Jane Ward on 5-Feb-1874 in Fayette County in the home of Mary Jane's grandfather, Willis Ward.

Miles and Mary Jane came to TX before 1898. Miles always wore a heavy mustache to hide the fact that he had lost two of his front teeth in a fight. When they left AL, they sold their land to Miles' brother, William F. Perhaps this was land left to Mary Jane at the death of her grandfather.

In TX Miles and Mary Jane lived in Taylor County, then Coryell County, and finally Coke County. Their property in Coke County was about 4 miles from the town of Fort Chadbourne . Miles developed skill in setting broken bones for family and friends.

Miles and Mary Jane were the parents of nine children:
