Permelia (Chappell) Kirkland was a woman of strength and fortitude. She bore 16 children, ran farm, and reared her children (single-handedly) while her husband was off soldering and legislating. At age 80 (1897) she made the ardourous train trip from AL to west TX to visit three sons. Her sons met her at Sweetwater with a wagon equipped with a bed for their mother to rest as they went south to Fort Chadbourne. Permelia chose instead to ride up front and two of her sons had to ride on the makeshift bed.
