George J. Wells Sr., 79, of 216 Denny St., died of cancer Tuesday at his home.

Mr. Wells and his wife operated a grocery store at New York Avenue and Main Street. For a time he worked at Sperling's Furniture and in 1949, the couple purchased Wimpy's Inn, 805 Ford St., which they operated for more than 50 years.

Born Oct. 9, 1924, in Ogdensburg, son of Albert and Emeriza Wells , he served in the Army Air Forces for three years during World War II.

He met his wife, Lois Ellen Gates, while both were employees of the Pentagon during World War II. They were married Dec. 30, 1944, at St. Matthew's Cathedral in Washington, D.C. Mrs. Wells died July 27, 1999.

He was a member of Grace Covenant Church and was a volunteer for many years at area correctional facilities.

Surviving are four sons and two daughters-in-law, a daughter and her husband, a sister, 23 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Two sons, Douglas P. and Steven J., died before him.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Grace Covenant Church, followed by a fellowship reception at the church.
