Lois Ellen Gates Wells, 72, of 216 Denny St., died Tuesday at Hepburn Medical Center. She had been ill with cancer.

Born May 24, 1927, in Detroit, Mich., daughter of Ralph and Marion Daggett Gates, she attended high school in Washington, D.C. She was employed at the Pentagon during World War II.

She married George J. Wells Sr., also a Pentagon employee, on Dec. 30, 1944, in St. Matthew's Cathedral, Washington, D.C. The couple lived in Arlington, Va., for a time before moving to Ogdensburg, where Mr. Wells operated a grocery store at the intersection of New York Avenue and Main Street. In 1949, they purchased Wimpy's Inn, 805 Ford St., and had operated it ever since.

An active church member, Mrs. Wells served in many ministry capacities along with her husband. She enjoyed camping on the St. Lawrence River, bird-watching and crafts.

Surviving besides her husband are four sons, a daughter, six sisters, a brother, 22 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Two sons died before her, Douglas on Nov. 1, 1987, and Steven on Aug. 21, 1994.

The funeral is at 10 a.m. today at Grace Covenant Church with the Rev. Dale LaHue, pastor, officiating. Entombment will be in Foxwood Mausoleum. Fox-McLellan Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
