LaVere Walker, 93, of The Brick Yard Community near Sumatra, went home to meet his Heavenly Father May 3,2003, after a long and courageous battle against cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents Edward L. and Elizabeth (Lizzie Brown) Walker, two brothers, Carl and Efford Walker and six sisters, Josephine Craft, Drucelli and Viola Walker, Mildred Leavins, Bertha Henderson and Agnes Rickards.

LaVere was born at the Brick Yard on April 8, 1910 and lived there his entire life. LaVere is survived by his loving wife and caregiver of fifty-eight years, Thelma Lolley Walker of Brick Yard; one son, Donnie (Alethea) Walker of Apalachicola, Florida; five daughters, Marie (J. Y.) Wimberly of Sumatra, Frances Harvey (Harlon Greene) of Crawfordville, Ethel (Buddy) Duggar of Pekin Illinois, Doris (Royce) Rolstad and Rhonda Norred of Apalachicola, Florida: eleven grandchildren; Wayne Barfield, Cheryl Raffield, Toby Barfield, Grant Harvey, Brant Duggar, Denna Horshe, Miranda Walker, D. J. Walker, Royce Rolstad III, Cassie Broker and Jessica Norred and twenty great grand children.

Funeral services will be held at Sumatra Baptist Church in Sumatra with the Rev. Beau Cooksey, Rev. Toby Barfield and the Rev. George Johnson officiating. Interment will be in the Brown Cemetery at the Brick Yard.
Asked to serve as active pallbearers are Ronnie Raffield, Ashley Raffield, Wayne Barfield, D. J. Walker, Royce Rolstad III, and Brant Duggar. Honorary pallbearers include Harlon Greene and Jesse Lolley.
LaVere's light shone very brightly while he was on this earth. He was an inspiration and a blessing to all who knew and loved him.
