Arnold was the son of James Hollie and Gracie (Thomas) Boyd. He was the fifth of thirteen children. Arnold married first the mother of his two sons Katherine Welch in 1962 in Seguin, Guadalupe, Texas and second Betty Pearl Ratliff in Virginia.

Arnold Boyd VANSANT, Va. – Arnold Boyd, age 67, passed away July 31, 2004, at Buchanan General Hospital. Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Hollie and Gracie Thomas Boyd. He was an active member of Faith in Christ Church and a member of Masonic Lodge 1268, Schertz, Texas. Mr. Boyd was a U.S. Air Force veteran. His 32-year career consisted of 10 years in the U.S. Air Force, from 1954 to 1964. He served in Japan, Philippines and Vietnam. His 22-year civil service career was at Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, where he provided maintenance for the military aircraft. During his career, he received a presidential citation from President Ford and shook hands with Presidents Ford and Johnson and astronaut Gus Grissom. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Oakie Boyd, and two sisters, Frankie and Georgie. Survivors include his ex-wife and best friend, Betty Pearl Shortridge; two sons, Dennis Keith Boyd of Vansant and Jeffrey Wayne Boyd, stationed in Guam with the U.S. Air Force; three brothers, Lonnie and Fonnie Boyd of Vansant and Harold Clyde Boyd of Alexandria, Ohio; five sisters, Bobbie Ratliff of Vansant, Garnie Guy of Gate City, Betty Ball of Rising Sun, Md., Phyllis Carruthers of Pickerington, Ohio, and Marlene Adams of Raleigh, N.C., and two grandchildren, Trevor and Kayla Boyd of Greeley, Kan. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, at Haysi Funeral Home, with Reverends Roy Lee Wilson, Kyle Ratliff, Lester Boyd, Chris Ratliff and Clyde Lambert officiating. Burial will follow in the Hollie Boyd Family Cemetery, Route 1, Vansant, (Little Fox Creek). Military graveside rites will be conducted by John Ratliff American Legion Post 164 of Grundy. Pallbearers will be Keith Boyd, Chris Boyd, Martin Ratliff, Mike Willis, Scott Willis, Robert Tiller, Mark Guy and Rob Miller. Honorary pallbearers will be Nolan Ball, James Guy, Samuel Adams, David Carruthers, Thurman Reedy Thomas, Beldon Thomas and Dr. H. Patel. The family will receive friends after 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 3, at Haysi Funeral Home, where a Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m., with an evening service to follow. Haysi Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
