Garnie Boyd Guy was the 5th child born to the union of James Hollie and Gracie (Thomas) Boyd. She was born at the Ira James place on Lucky Branch, a tributary of Rusell Fork River in Buchanan County, Virginia; and was delivered by Adeline Viers, a local midwife. When she was about 3 years old, the family moved to Uncle Dave Deel's homeplace at Murphy. The place was affectionately referred to as "the cliff," and it was while living there that she started school at the old Deel School. When she was 9 years old the family moved into their own home on Little Fox Creek, and it was here that she blossomed into a beautiful young girl. After moving to Little Fox, she attended school at the old Deel School at the mouth of the creek; and also the Little Fox School at the head of the creek. Garnie graduated from Council High School in 1950, and immediately moved to Detroit, Michigan, where she was first employed at Fannie Farmer Candy Company. She later secured employment with the Bell Telephone Company, and while working there she met and fell in love with Jimmy Guy. They were married in January, 1954, and soon moved to San Francisco, California for 2 years before moving back to Detroit. They lived in Detroit until the early 1990's, when they moved to Euma in Scott County, Virginia.

Garnie was born again in August, 2000, and was baptized by Rev. Roy Lee Wilson and Rev. Lester Boyd. She did not officially join a particular church, but always referred to the experience as "when I joined the church."

Garnie was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2006, and lived over 7 years with the disease. In August, 2012, she was moved into the home of Sandra Owens on Rakes Ridge. It was here that she lived the last 16 months of her life. Time and disease claimed her mind, memory and body, but it never conquered her beautiful smile and caring spirit.

She was survived by her son, Mark Anthony Guy; her grandson, David James Guy; her sisters, Bobbie Ratliff, Betty Willis-Ball, Phyllis Coralini and Marlene Adams; and her brothers, Lonnie, Fonnie and Clyde Boyd. In addition to her parents she was preceeded in death by 2 sisters, Frankie and Georgie Boyd, and 2 brothers, Oakie and Arnold Boyd. She was also preceeded in death by her precious baby daughter, Barbara Diane Boyd, in 1948.
