He was a 1961 graduate of Council High School and viewed his classmates as family. He was employed as a coal miner for 36 years, 26 of which were spent at the VP#1 shaft on Dismal.
He was born-again at the age of 20 and was baptized on the 1st Sunday in September 1963, by Rev. Elijah Boyd and his future father-in-law, Rev. Milton Boyd. He had been a member of Big Fox Community Church for 60 years, where he faithfully served as a deacon and adult Sunday School teacher for over 35 years. He loved the Word of God and had read the Bible through over 75 times.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a special grandfather and life-long hero, James Albert Thomas; four sisters, Frankie Boyd, Georgie Boyd, Garnie Guy and Phyllis Coralini and two brothers, Oakie Boyd and Arnold Boyd.
He is survived by his wife of almost 58 years, Joann Boyd; daughter, Heather Boyd, and her husband, Joseph; son, Lonnie Keith Boyd, and his wife Denise; two granddaughters, Laura Boyd and Anna Boyd; his twin brother, Fonnie Boyd, of Leemaster; brother, Clyde Boyd, of Alexandria, OH; three sisters, Bobbie Ratliff of Haysi; Betty Ball of Little Fox Creek and Marlene Adams of Raleigh, NC; two special friends who he loved like brothers, Wilson Allen of Hurley and Jerry Ratliff of Little Fox.
The family will receive friends from 12 until 1 on Saturday, December 9, 2023, at Big Fox Community Church, where funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Rev. Lester Boyd and Rev. Edward Tiller will officiate.
Burial will follow in the W. A. Boyd Cemetery on Big Fox Creek. Pallbearers will be Tony Perkins, Tony Viers, Chris Boyd, Rex Tiller, Paul Coleman, Butch Boyd, Tanner Boyd, Ronald Tiller and Aaron Evans.
