Mercedes was the second daughter and fifth of ten children born to Hugh Wilson Beachum (1870-1940) and his wife Regina Belle Simmons (1865-1945). She married Thomas Vernon Carpenter (1890-1963) and they had eight children: Children: Wilmar Joice Carpenter (14 May 1915), Wilson Edward/Edwin Carpenter (23 Feb. 1918-17 Oct. 1971, m. Gladys Crotts, d. Hamlet, NC, bur. Richmond Memorial Park, Rockingham, NC), Horace Gallagher Carpenter (3 Jan. 1920-12 May 1984, Wadesboro), Ray Thomas Carpenter (5 May 1922-3 Aug. 1923, Hopewell), James Harris Carpenter (18 Nov. 1923-3 June 1925, Hopewell, died of colitis), Virginia L.
