There is a mistake in the biography, KENTUCKY: A HISTORY OF THE STATE, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1886, Allen County, which concerns the children. There was never a "Bettie Clay" Pitchford. The biographer merged one of their daughter's names, Elizabeth "Bettie" b. 1865, with one of their son's name, Clay b. 1867, and created the "Bettie Clay" Pitchford by mistake, who never existed.

Son of Judge Nero and Elizabeth M. (Gatewood) Pitchford, of Allen County, Kentucky. Grandson of Orange Davis Sr. and Mary E. (Fitzpatrick) Pitchford and grandson of Fletcher and Mary (Calvert) Gatewood. Clay is one of twelve children were born to Nero and Elizabeth. The twelve named: Mary Edward, Emma A., William George, Laura D., Catherine Winston, Elizabeth Bettie, Clay, James Emory, John Jasper, Loula, Bruce and Finis.

Married Ida Hale about July 21,1894 in Sebastian county, Arkansas, their son, Harry Pitchford, born in Red River County, Texas. After Harry's birth they parted.

Married Florence about May 4, 1910 in Bryan county, Oklahoma, their daughter, Beulah Pitchford, was born in Bryan county, Oklahoma.
