William Haynes, the son of John Barton Haynes and Rhoda A. Huff, was born February 1, 1806 in Mercer County, Kentucky where his parents had lived before coming to Ohio County, Kentucky. His paternal grandparetns were William Haynes, Jr. and Hannah Ellis of Amherst County, Virginia. His maternal grandparents were William Huff and Mary B. Hungate, also of Virginia before moving to Kentucky afterthe Revolutionary War.

William Haynes amd Emelia "Millie" Whitely Haynes were probably married about 1826 in Grayson County, Kentucky. She was the oldest of the 13 known children of John Whitely and Bathsheba Haynes. William and Emelia were second cousins.

William and Emeilia were living with their son Samuel Jackson Haynes and his family in Ellis, Ohio County, Kentucky at the time of the 1880 census. William died there at the age of 82 years, 5 months and 27 days on July 28, 1888. His wife Emilia Whitely Haynes died there six months later at the age of 84 years, 3 months and 28 day on January 9, 1889. They were buried in the Panther Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Herbert, Ohio County, Kentucky.
