AN HONORED CITIZEN
Death of Barton Acuff in His 79th Year

Uncle Barton Acuff, a veteran of the Mexican war, and one of Monroe County's best known citizens, died at ten o'clock Wednesday morning at his home near Ellettsville in his 79th year.

Mr. Acuff became ill last October, and his condition constantly grew worse. The immediate cause of his death was paralysis, and after a severe stroke a few weeks ago it could be seen that the end was near.

As a citizen, the deceased stood high in the community. He was respected by all his fellow townsmen. He was kind as a father, and in his death the community has lost a good man.

Barton Warren Acuff was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, November 13, 1822. He removed to Monroe County with his father when he was only three years old and several years later volunteered his services in the Mexican war. He was made Second Lieutenant in Company G, 4th Indiana, and as a soldier he made an excellent record. He was elected Captain of the Home Guards during the Civil War. He was a leading member of the Masonic fraternity.

Mr. Acuff was united in marriage January 26, 1854, to Sarah Ann Figg. To this union were born eight children, all of whom survive. They are: Mrs. Louie Chambers, Spencer; Mrs. Henry Corr, Bryant's Creek; Mrs. Lizzie Ridge; Emma, Laura, Bell, Thomas and Warren Acuff. Mrs. Acuff died about a year ago.

The funeral occurred at two o'clock yesterday p.m. from the Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev. Gaither. The Masons will attend in a body and have charge of the funeral. A number of Masons from here will attend.
