In the old home where the children were reared their golden wedding was celebrated September 26, 1911.
He was a life of labor and service of humble parentage, one of thirteen children, all of whom reached maturity, his early life was spent in helping subdue the mighty wilderness of the Wabash valley, his later years in bringing cultivation the prairies of Kansas. He became a member of the M. E. church in 1875. His character was one of the major sweetness, unassuming and sincere, sunny and patient with always a smile and cheery word of greeting. Never in an acquaintanceship covering a period of twenty-five years has the writer heard one word against Jim Helvie.
He is survived by his wife and five children, Mrs. Ida Walthour, W.F. Helvie and Mrs. Edna Wickman of Newton; J.M. Helvie, of Argentine, Kan; and L.C. Helvie, of Coldwater, Kan. Three children, Bertha, Frank and Lulu preceded him in childhood to an eternal home. There are also twenty-one grandchildren, most of whom reside in Kansas and three great grandchildren.
To the family and especially the stricken wife may the Comforter come with the healing, which no human sympathy can give.
