Rev John McQuiston was born in Venango county, PA May 5, 1827. While walking (riding his horse) on the railroad track at night on Oct., 17, 1898 in a storm he was struck by a train and killed instantly. He was returning to his home south of Topeka, Kan., from Eskridge, where he had been assisting in a revival meeting. He had often expressed a desire to die in the harness, and he had his wish.

Bro. McQuiston was converted when a young man and joined the Church. He came to Kansas in 1859 and joined the Kansas Conference in 1860. He was one of the pioneer preachers in Kansas and helped greatly in the formative period of the state. He held various appointments in the eastern part of the state, and served one term as presiding elder of the Wichita district. He superannuated in 1891 but had been active in evangelical work since that time. He was a sweet spirited man, very practical and energetic. His life was a benediction to all who knew him. He leaves a son, Simeon McQuiston, who lives in Oklahoma, and a daughter, Mrs. M. E. Henderson, with whom Bro. McQuiston made his home since the death of his wife four years ago.'
