BRIGGS
Mary Magdalene Zimmerman, daughter of Charles and Lucy Zimmerman, was born Jan. 6, 1902. At the age of 95, Mary departed this life Dec. 26, 1997, at the Chariton Nursing and Rehab Center where she had resided for the past six years.
Mary was born in Cainsville, Mo., later moving with her family to Lucas County, Iowa. She later met Rex Pearl Briggs and they were married on Nov. 28, 1921. To this union nine children were born.
At the age of 25, Mary and her husband gave their hearts to the Lord Jesus Christ and from there on, she lived her life to please God in every way she knew. Mary was an example of Godliness to those who knew her. She loved to read and study history. She was a teacher at her church for many years.
After the death of her husband, Mary moved to Dallas, Texas, where several of her children lived, then to Robards, Ky., where her daughter Waunita lived. Mary returned to Chariton in 1983 and lived at Autumn Park for nine years. She had made her home at the Nursing and Rehab Center for six years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one son, Rex J.; daughter, Donna Marie; and two grandchildren.
Mary is survived by seven children; Ernest Briggs of Dallas, Texas; Louise Parker of Durant, Okla.; Gene Briggs of Lafayette, La.; Ruth Carter of Sedalia, Mo.; Waunita Jones of Robards, Ky.; Colene Reynolds of Chariton; 26 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997, at the Chariton Assembly of God Church with Pastor Earl Kelly and the Rev. Paul Jones officiating. Serving as bearers were her grandsons: Larry Hibbets, Greg Jones, Eddie Jones, Steve Rutledge, Dave Reynolds, Gary Williams, Kevin Swarthout, Kevin Marshall and Kyle Reynolds. Burial was in the Coal Glen Cemetery.
