Obituary – The Ford Promoter June 8, 1911, p. 1
James Wilson McCaffrey was born at Fairview, Guernsey County, Ohio, February 15, 1835, and died at the Kansas State Soldiers' Home, May 29, 1911, aged 76 years, 3 months and 14 days.
He enlisted as a private in Co. E, 34th Iowa Infantry, on the 14th day of August, 1852, to serve three years, and was discharged at Houston, Texas, on August 15th, 1865, having served honorably his full term of enlistment. He had been transferred from Co. E to Co. D of the same regiment while in service.
He was married January 1, 1884, to Sarah C. Purcell, in Montgomery County, Kansas. To them were born six children, five daughters and the son are living to mourn, with the bereaved wife and mother, the departure of the beloved husband and father to his home in the glory land.
Father McCaffrey was converted in early manhood and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church. He has lived a consistent Christian life all these years, and died in the triumph of a living faith.
He was treasurer of the Fort dodge Sunday school for several years, holding that office with us until failing health compelled him to resign almost a year ago. He was also a faithful teacher in our Sunday school for many years. He came to Kansas in February, 1877, and lived in Montgomery County until April, 1890, she he came, with his family, to this home, where he has lived almost continuously until he heard the last roll call, and went to join the great majority in the Father's house above.
Father McCaffrey is greatly revered by his comrades, and no man has gone to his reward from this home who will be more greatly missed than he.
The bereaved family has the sincere sympathy of the entire home. May the God of all grace give them comfort in this dark hour.
