Charles Hill, the son of Jacob Hill and Catharine Block, was born on his father's farm in Whitehall Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania in 1809. In the summer of 1823 when 14 years old, his father moved the family to Clinton Township, Seneca County, Ohio. Here Charles married Sarah Daniel circa 1829 and started his own family.

In the summer of 1839 Charles and his family moved to Clay Township, Kosciusko County, Indiana together with his father and brothers and their families. Charles and Sarah had 12 children--George T., Henry, John Milton, Stephen, Catharine A., Amanda, Thomas J., Malinda, Charles, Synthia, William Wilson and Leah I. Their first four children were born in Seneca County, the remaining eight children were born in Kosciusko County.

Sarah died in February 1856, three weeks after the birth of Leah T. Charles apparently married on June 22, 1856 his sister-in-law Cynthia Daniel, the recent widow of Thomas J. Elder. This marriage must have ended in divorce prior to February, 1861 when Charles married again.

On February 9, 1861 Charles married Mary E. Batzner, a widow with a three year old son, John Bloomer. Charles and Mary had six children--Sarena Arbella, Andrew Jackson, Albert, Daniel F., Mary E. and Clara V.

Charles died on April 24, 1895 and was buried in the Hill family cemetery next to his first wife Sarah and his parents.
