John Milton Hill, son of Charles Hill and Sarah Daniel, was born in 1833 on his father's farm in Clinton Township, Seneca County, Ohio. When six years old his father moved his family along with other Hill families to Clay Township, Kosciusko County, Indiana in the summer of 1839.

On December 16, 1854 John married Charlotte Graham who died in April 1862 leaving three infant children--Ella, Jenny and William T.

On August 13, 1862 John married Catherine Carr and on the same day, with his brother Stephen, he enlisted as a Private in Co. I, 12th Regiment, Indiana Infantry. As a part of the Army of Tennessee, he participated in more than 45 engagements including Vicksburg, Atlanta and Sherman's march to the sea. He took part in the Grand Review of Western Armies in Washington, D. C. in May 1865. He was Mustered Out there on June 6, 1865.

John returned to farming in Clay Township. He and Catherine had five children born there--Stephen, Mary Della, Silas, Frank and Horton. John died in July 1900 and was buried in Center Church Cemetery in Lake Township, Kosciusko County, Indiana.
