Ludie enlisted in the US Army in May 1942 and was stationed at Camp Shelby, Hattiesburg, Forrest County, MS. After being honorably discharged from the Army in order to take employment in essential War industry, Ludie and family moved to Meridian, Lauderdale County, MS
to work at Alden Mills. A daughter Geraldine was born to Ludie and Vera Mae about 1943. Her nickname was "Sweetpea". Ludie and Vera Mae separated, assumed divorced. Vera Mae moved back to her family in Laurel and Ludie lost contact with his daughter.
Ludie had a stroke in 1965 and was totally disabled. However, he could still talk.
Because there were no available rooms in Meridian, he was placed in Sumter Nursing Home in York, Sumter County, Alabama, where he received excellent care for the remainder of his days.
He died from kidney failure on 13 February 1967.
His body was brought back to his beloved Clarke County for burial beside his parents.
