Charles Fletcher Field was born 28 Nov. 1861 in Rockingham Co., North Carolina, the only son of the Reverend Benton Field (1797-1871) and his third wife Lucy Christmas Hopper (1821-1893, widow of Joseph Lane at the time of their marriage). Both Benton and Lucy had numerous children by previous marriages, so Charles had quite a few half siblings. In fact, several of Benton's sons had married Lucy's daughters.

Charles married Lizzie S. Stout (1867-1956) on 24 Nov. 1885. She was a daughter of J. A. Stout and his wife Mary Doughty. She was born in New Jersey, though her parents were from Pennsylvania. Charles and Lizzie moved from Leaksville, Rockingham Co., NC to Falls, Fayette Co., West Va. in the 1890s, to Roanoke, Virginia in 1904, and they were living at Kempsville, Princess Anne County in 1930. (I can't find them in the 1920 census.)

Charles and Lizzie had four children:

1. Joseph "Joe" Benton Field, 1 Sept. 1886, per WW I registration. He was living in Roanoke, Va. in 1957, when he wrote a letter that was quoted in a history of the Leaksville (NC) Methodist Church that was published that year. Joe Benton married Virginia Henrian Taylor on 14 Dec. 1911. One son listed in the 1930 census: Charles R. Field (c. 1913).

2. Myra George Field, born Sept. 1889, per the 1900 census. Living with parents in 1900, 1910.

3. Bessie May Field, born 10 Aug. 1891, died 10 Oct. 1891, bur. Lawson Cemetery, Rockingham Co., NC.

4. Lois E. Field, born circa 1915, listed in parents' household in 1930. If she was born in 1915, her mother would have been in her late 40s, but I suppose that's possible.
