He was ward clerk of Grover for 18 years, was YMMIA superintendent,an ? kindergarten teacher, and was active in drama and genealoyt work.
The last year he was in Grover he devoted much of his time re-copying the older records of the Grover ward, making them more complete and up to date.
He was an excellent penman and took great pride in his work.
Charlees Thurman, Former Grover Resident, Dies
Charles Alvin Thurman, 83, former resident of Grover, Wyo., and Blackfoot Idaho, died Friday in Whittier, Calif. following major surgery about two weeks previous.
He was born Aug 7, 1879 to Edward M and Feminna Besella Stewart Thurman. He moved with his parents to Star Valley Wyo. as a young boy and grew up there, He married Zelpha Lowder, Oct 11, 1906 in the Salt Lake Temple They went to Blackfoot in 1924 and lived there 33 years befor moving to California. His wife precededd him in death as did a son, Varlan.
While living in Blackfoot, Mr Thurman was employed at Kraft Cheese Co. and as a flag man on the highway between Blackfoot and Idaho Falls. He also worked as a janitor at the Blackfoot First Ward Church.
He was a lifelong active member of the LDS Church. In Grover, Wyo., he served as ward clerk many years. He also servied as Sunday School Superintendent and MIA Superintendent and as a Sunday school teacher, and in his later life he did genealogy work.
Funeral services were held Monday at 2 p.m. in the Whittier First Ward and burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Whittier.
Four sons and five daughters survive. They are Willard C., Blackfoot; Edward L., Phoenix Ariz, Newel L. El Paso Texas; Ivan L., Murray, Utah; Thora Tetly, Santa Monica, Calif.; Merna B. Maden, LaPuente, Calif.; Ada Wallwork Glendora, Calif; Mable Larsen Takima, Wash.; and LaRell Bird, Van Nuys, Calif.
There are also 37 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and the following brothers and sisters, Ray S., Grover; Nelly Dewey, Emmett, Idaho; Hattie Aleman, Datie O;Keefe and Matilda Currier all of Afton, Wyo, and Dr. O Marion Thurman, Meridian, Idaho.
