Nancy Ann Owen was the daughter of Robert Owen and Rececca Ruth Swearingen. On her fathers side she was the granddaughter of Lawrence Owen and Sarah (Kennedy?). On her mothers side she was the granddaughter of Samuel Swearingen and Ann Farrell. Samuel Swearingen was the son of "Maryland Van" Swearingen and Elizabeth Walker, and Van Swearingen was the son of Thomas Swearingen and Jane Doyne. Thomas was the son of Gerret/Gerrit Van Sweringen who arrived from the Netherlands aboard the "Prince Maurice" March 8, 1657, and his wife Barbara de Barrette who arrived from France with her parents Isaac and Hester.

Nancy Ann Owen's siblings were; Kennedy Owen who married Agnes Riddell; Lawrence Owne who married Sally Hughes; and Sarah "Sally" Owen who married Alexander Neill of Hagerstown, Maryland.

Nancy Ann married Luke Tiernan January 6, 1793 by the Rev. M. Cahill in Hagerstown.

The following from page 29-30 of "The Tiernen family in Maryland" by Charles B. Tiernan:

"Mrs. Luke Tiernan was kind and hospitable and charitable. She was President of the Baltimore Orphan Asylum, which was the first institution of the kind established in this city, (having been founded in 1778,) and one of the first in the country.

Her name, together with the names of other ladies and gentlemen, the first Managers of this Institution, is in a frame, which is over the mantle piece, in the Reception room of their present fine buliding, No., 215 North Stricker Street. She was also connected with many of the other charities of the city." - end quote

Nancy Ann and Luke Tiernan had eleven children; Agnes; Kennedy Owen; Luke; Michael; Sally; William; Maria; Rebecca; Charles; Ann; and Catherine.
