She was the daughter of Samuel and Mary Anne (Farrell) Swearingen. She married Robert Owen February 21, 1773 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Frederick Maryland. Her husband died at the young age of 36 years leaving her with four young children. She later went to live with son-in-law Alexander Neill and daughter Sarah in Hagerstown.
