Mary Ann Shea was named for her grandmother. She was born and raised in Georgetown. Mary Ann was the mother of William Wolcott Shea USN, John Dwight Shea USN and Robert E. Shea USMC, a recipient of the Purple Heart for injuries he received in the Marshall Islands campaign of WWII. John Dwight is buried at Fayetteville National Cemetery in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Both Robert and Wolcott are buried at Arlington National Cemetery. The military was a family tradition. Mary Ann's great grandfather was Captain William Sommerville of the 8th Penna. Rgmt. Western Dept of the Continental Line. Her uncle Obed Waite Sommerville was a Union soldier in the Civil War having run away from home in D.C. to enlist at the age of 16.
