Capt. ROBERT E. SHEA, USMC (Ret.)

On February 25, 2011 of Arlington, VA. Beloved husband of Dorothy Stadtler Shea. Predeceased by his parents, William and Mary Sommerville Shea and brother, Capt. John Dwight Shea, USN (Ret.) and Lt. CDR Wolcott Shea, USN (Ret.).
During WWII Robert enlisted while a student at Georgetown Prep School. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds he received in the Marshall Island campaign.
Robert spent tours in Parris Island, S.C., Opa-locka Air Station, Florida, Okinawa, Japan, Quantico, VA Camp Lejuene, N.C. and Hawaii.
Robert's grandfather Daniel Shea emigrated from Ireland in 1861. He arrived in America at the age of 19 was enlisted in the Union Army and was wounded at Burnside's Bridge during the battle of Antietam. Brother Wolcott & grandfather Daniel Shea are also buried at Arlington. On the Sommerville side Robert had cousins & uncles on both sides of the Civil War. His great uncle Obed Waite Sommerville was wounded at the Battle of Ball's Bluff. John A Edwards,CSA died as a result of wounds received at the battle of Brandy Station Virginia. Robert was the g'g'g' grandson of Captain William Sommerville of the 8th Penna Rgmt of the Continental Line. There is a long proud tradition of military service in the Sommerville & Shea families.
