He served during the Civil War with the 45th or 49th Iowa Infantry, depending on the source. He married Lamoille Lucy Parish on 30 June 1870 in Manhattan, Kansas and they had 6 children, one of which died in infancy.

His obituary in the Solomon [Kansas] Tribune, issue of 5 March 1909 read:
BLAIR: Charles N. Blair b. 8 Dec 1845 Kossuth, Iowa; served in Civil War with 45 Iowa Inf; mov to Solomon Mar 1866; m 30 June 1870 at Manhattan, Kan, to Miss Lamoille Parish; d Mon (1 Mar 1909); bur Prairie Mound cem; surv by wife, 2 sons, 3 daus; a bro A.H. of Wakeeney came to funeral.
